The Dunbar Apartments, constructed in 1926, was the first apartment complex for African Americans. Located in North-Central Harlem in New York City, the apartments took up an entire block and had 511 different apartments. They were built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and designed by Andrew J. Thomas.
The apartments were constructed of 10 U-shaped buildings surrounding an inner garden. The apartments also contained a nursery school, playground, retail stores, and even a branch of the Dunbar National Bank. That branch of the bank was the first to be managed and staffed by African Americans.
The Dunbar Apartments are an important place to visit because it was one of the first large apartment complexes for African Americans. Not only was it the first, but it was also a very nice one. It had many resources for them and allowed them to live freely and weren't denied anything.
