Little Rock Central High School external image central%20high.jpg

Little Rock Central High School is a location where civil rights were tested, and where the "Little Rock Crisis" took place. It was originally a racially segregated school, meaning that African Americans were not allowed to attend. A small group of African Americans finally enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. They were called "The Little Rock Nine".

On their first day of school, the guards refused to let them in. They were also followed by mobs shouting threats regarding lynching. At LRCHS many segregationist councils threatened to have protests and to physically block the nine students from entering the school. Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus supported these segregationists by deploying the Arkansas National Guard.

(Someone's pissed...)

The Mayor of Little Rock, Woodrow Man asked President Eisenhower to send federal troops so that the students would be able to safely attend the school. Eisenhower then ordered the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army to Little Rock, where The Little Rock Nine finally and successfully made it to school.

After the Little Rock Crisis, the movement of gradual integration in Arkansas schools began. This was also possible due to the Brown vs. Board of Education in Topeka, Kansas 1954 declaring that all laws establishing segregated schools were unconstitutional. The Little Rock Nine students were: Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Meals.

Why did I choose this place to visit? I did so because I am a high school student myself, and I can't imagine anyone being rejected of an education in today's society. Wayland High School is a fairly diverse school, and we accept everyone of any race. I think it is really interesting to look around and see how different our school is from LRCHS before The Little Rock Crisis. It would be very strange going to school with only caucasians.

What's cool about LRCHS?
*It's notorious for the Governor Orval Faubus and President Dwight Eisenhower showdown.
*It has the most state championships of any Arkansas high school.
*The Tiger is one of the oldest high school published newspapers in the country.
*Sporty people like Brooks Robinson (Orioles) and Bill Dickey (Yankees) went here.

Don't forget to check out the Visitor Center, located diagonally across from the school, (OMG COOL). As well as the Central High Commemorative Garden, it has 9 trees and benches representing the students. Apparently the Mobil gas station is also historic. I guess just being there during the time of the crisis makes you special too.
