The Phoenix Police Department in Phoenix, Arizona is arguably the most powerful police department in the state of Arizona. The station was founded when the city of Phoenix was founded, in 1881. Before the use of radio was used, the Phoenix Police Department relied on bells and flashing lights to alert themselves to answer call boxes on the street corners. As technology has grown within the department, so has the number of officers. Today over 3,800 officers protect the city of Phoenix.
I chose this place for three reasons:
1. Arizona is close to the US/Mexican border and I am really interested in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
2. Recently an immigration bill has been passed in Arizona that forces immigrants to carry their Alien registration documents at all times. It also requires the police to question people if there is reason to suspect that they are in the United States illegally. This is a huge issue today because it fosters racial profiling. While it seems as if today America gives rights to all, it in fact immigrants and people of mexican decent are still fighting for their Civil Rights.
3. When examining this new bill we are able to connect the struggles for Civil Rights in the past, to the struggles for Civil Rights today. Although it seems as if all of America's troubles have already been fixed, we are now forced to see that The United States does not yet have liberty and justice for all.
A little more information:
Governer Jan Brewer signed a bill which she hopes will crack down on illegal immigration. Previously officers were only allowed to check someones immigration status only if he or she was suspected in another crime. Now an officer is able to question anyone at anytime. This bill is considered to be the toughest immigration law in the nation. Brewer also issued a statement reqiureing poliece to be able to implement the law without engaging in racial profiling or discrimination. "Racial profiling is illegal. It is illegal in America, and it's certainly illegal in Arizona," Says Brewer.
There are many people who feel this new law is unjust and goes against the constitution. President Obama said this law was "misguided" and could violate people's Civil Rights. It is also feared that this law will deter hispanics from reporting crimes. The Mexican American Legal Defence said that is "launches Arizona into a spiral of pervasive fear, community distrust, increased crime and costly litigation, with nationwide repercussions." Many people believe that this new bill is taking away all the migrants have fought for in this country. Many immigrants are treated unjustly anyways, but now this way of treating people is protected under the law.
