Statues of people at the Seneca Falls Convention 1848

The Seneca Falls Convention was one of the earliest and first major women's rights conventions in American history. The convetion started on July 19th and ended a day later on July 20th in 1848. Women first came up with the idea of holding a women's rights convetion after the 1849 World Anti-Slavery Convetion were women were not allowed to actively participate.

Over 200 women and also 48 men attended, among them were Frederick Doughless and Lucretia Mott. The convetion was held to discuss the political and legal limitations that women faced back then. The result of the convention is considred by many the birth place of feminism since it was the first time that American women had a say. During the convetintion, the Declaration of Sentiments was created that was modeled on the declation of independance and outlined basic rights that women should have.



I chose Seneca Falls because:

1) I am interested in how women's rights came to be through the course of American history. I wanted to learn how the women's rights movement got started and the Seneca Falls Convetion happened to be the first women's rights convention in the United States.

Fun things to do while in Seneca Falls:

- Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds)
- Go fishing in Caygua Lake State Park
- Fish, swim or boat in the Finger Lakes.
- Play a game of golf on an 18 hole golf course at the Seneca Falls Country Club!
- Visit the Seneca Museum on Waterways and Industry to see how factories were powered by mills.
