Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan, NY, is important in understanding the fight for civil rights because it is the assassination sight of one of the most famous civil rights leaders in american history. This leader would be Malcolm X. Malcolm spread the message that Blacks had to take their rights "by any means necessary" because they were not going to simply land in their laps. He stressed that Blacks were kept down through the force of racist violence and murder. The legacy of Malcolm X is militant action.

On February 21, 1965, in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom, Malcolm X began his speech to a meeting of the Organization of Afro-American Unity. Then a disturbance came from the crowd. A man yelled "Nigger! Get your hand out of my pocket!" as bodyguards moved in to quiet the disturbance, a man rushed forward and shot Malcolm X in the chest with a sawed-off shotgun. Two other men charged the stage and fired handguns shortly after. Malcolm X had been hit with 16 shots. Angered audience members captured one of the assassins and beat him when the other two assassins fled the hectic scene. Malcolm X was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Located in Auburn, New York, Harriet Tubman's house was home to hundres of people throughout the years. It was home to the homeless, sick, and hungry. However it wasn't just one house that they lived in. They had many houses on 25 acres of land that she owned. In 1863, Tubman led a group of African American Union Soldiers on raids along the Comcahee River in Souther Carolina. She met one of the soldiers named Nelson Davis and they married six years later in Auburn. They lived in a Brick House of that property until Davis's death.

Palin and Laura Bush are both pictured here visiting the houses. The houses that Tubman lived in are time capsules into the past and pay a tribute to the kind soul of Tubman and the harsh realities of the South back when slavery back in the day.

The reason I chose this spot for our class to go on is because Harriet Tubman is an amazing person. She helped so many African Americans come up from the South during the era of slavery. The reason I though about her to chose was because the underground railroad kept coming up in the search result for google when I was searching for a place to go on our field trip. The underground railroad isn't actually a railroad that is underground, however when I hear the term used, I always think of an actual underground railroad and I find it intriguing.
